Ice dams may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Portland weather, but they are a real concern for Oregon homeowners. As more water melts and flows down the roof, it backs up behind the ice dam. This pooling water has nowhere to drain, so it seeps under shingles, into the roof deck, and eventually into your attic or walls. The result can be water stained ceilings, peeling paint, damaged insulation, and in severe cases, structural rot.
In Oregon, ice dams most commonly form during cold snaps that follow snowfall events. The Portland area typically sees a few snow events each winter, and temperatures can drop into the low 20s during cold spells. Homes in areas like Sandy, Government Camp, and the east side of the Gorge experience colder temperatures and more snow, making ice dams a more frequent concern.
Clogged gutters make the problem worse. When gutters are filled with debris, water cannot drain even during normal conditions. Add freezing temperatures to the mix, and the standing water in clogged gutters turns to ice, creating the foundation for an ice dam. This is one of the most important reasons to clean your gutters thoroughly in late fall before winter weather arrives.
How to Prevent Ice Dams
The most effective way to prevent ice dams is to address the root cause: heat loss through the roof. When your attic stays cold, the snow on your roof does not melt prematurely, and the cycle that creates ice dams never begins.
Proper attic insulation is the first line of defense. Many older Portland homes have inadequate attic insulation, allowing warm air from the living spaces below to heat the underside of the roof deck. Upgrading your attic insulation to current Oregon building code standards keeps the heat inside your home where it belongs and prevents it from warming the roof surface.
Attic ventilation works hand in hand with insulation. A well ventilated attic allows cold outside air to circulate under the roof deck, keeping the roof surface uniformly cold. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and gable vents all contribute to proper airflow. If your attic feels warm on a cold day, that is a sign that ventilation needs improvement.
Sealing air leaks is the third piece of the puzzle. Gaps around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, attic hatches, and ductwork allow warm air to escape into the attic space. On the gutter side, keeping your gutters clean and clear before winter is essential. Remove all leaves, needles, and debris in late November so that water can flow freely through the system during the occasional thaw. Ensure that downspouts are clear and that water is directed away from the foundation through extensions or underground drainage.
Installing heat cables along the roof edge and inside gutters is another option, though it should be considered a supplement rather than a primary solution. Heat cables provide a channel for melted water to drain through even when ice is present, but they do not address the underlying heat loss that causes ice dams in the first place. They also add to your electricity costs during winter months.
What to Do If Ice Dams Form
If you notice an ice dam forming on your home, it is important to act carefully. The wrong approach can cause more damage than the ice dam itself.
Do not attempt to chip or hack at ice dams with a hammer, chisel, or ice pick. This can damage your shingles and gutter system. Do not use rock salt or calcium chloride directly on your roof, as these chemicals can stain and corrode roofing materials and gutters.
If you can safely reach the area, you can fill a nylon stocking or mesh bag with calcium chloride pellets and lay it across the ice dam perpendicular to the gutter. The calcium chloride will slowly melt a channel through the ice, allowing trapped water to drain. This is a temporary measure that relieves pressure while you address the root cause.
Using a roof rake from the ground to remove snow from the first three to four feet of the roof edge can help prevent ice dams from forming or getting worse. By removing the snow before it has a chance to melt and refreeze, you interrupt the cycle. Roof rakes are designed for this purpose and allow you to work safely from ground level.
If water is already leaking into your home, the immediate priority is damage control. Place buckets or towels to catch water, and contact a professional to assess the situation.
