Portland receives approximately 43 inches of rain in a typical year. That number puts it well above the national average and makes gutter performance a serious concern for every homeowner in the metro area. But annual totals only tell part of the story. What matters most for gutter sizing is not how much rain falls over the entire year, but how much falls during the heaviest hours of the heaviest storms.
Most of Portland's rain arrives between October and March, with November and December being the wettest months. During this six month stretch, the city regularly experiences sustained rain events that last for days. Atmospheric river storms, which are long corridors of moisture drawn from the Pacific Ocean, can deliver two to three inches of rain in 24 hours. These events push gutter systems to their limits, and undersized gutters simply cannot keep up.
How Gutter Sizing Is Calculated
Gutter sizing is not a matter of personal preference or visual taste. It is an engineering calculation based on three factors: the square footage of the roof area draining into each gutter run, the pitch of the roof, and the maximum rainfall intensity for the area.
Roof area is straightforward. You measure the footprint of the roof section that drains to a particular gutter run and multiply by a pitch factor. Steeper roofs catch more wind driven rain, so the effective drainage area increases with pitch. A roof with a 6 in 12 pitch has an adjustment factor of about 1.05, while a steep 12 in 12 pitch uses a factor of 1.3. That means a steep roof acts as if it has 30 percent more surface area than its footprint suggests.
Rainfall intensity is measured in inches per hour at a five minute peak interval. Portland's design rainfall intensity is roughly 4 inches per hour for a five minute burst during a significant storm event. This is the number that drives gutter sizing because gutters must handle the peak flow, not the average. A gutter that works fine during steady moderate rain will overflow during a sudden downpour if it was sized only for average conditions.
A standard 5 inch K style gutter can handle about 5,520 square inches of water cross section. In practical terms, this means a 5 inch gutter can drain roughly 600 square feet of adjusted roof area during peak Portland rainfall intensity. A 6 inch gutter handles about 7,960 square inches, which translates to roughly 960 square feet of adjusted roof area under the same conditions.
Why Many Portland Homes Need 6 Inch Gutters
Consider a typical Portland ranch style home with a simple gable roof. Each side of the roof might measure 40 feet long and 18 feet from ridge to eave, giving each side 720 square feet of drainage area. With a moderate roof pitch, the adjusted area could reach 760 square feet or more. A single 5 inch gutter run at 600 square feet of capacity would be undersized for this roof. During a peak intensity storm, the gutter would overflow because the water arrives faster than the trough can move it to the downspout outlets.
A 6 inch gutter on that same 40 foot run handles the load comfortably. The wider trough provides a buffer during peak flow, and the additional depth means water can rise higher without spilling over the front edge. Combined with a 3x4 downspout every 20 feet, the 6 inch system drains the roof efficiently even during the worst storms Portland typically experiences.
Two story homes face an even bigger challenge. Upper roof sections often dump water onto lower roof sections, which then combines with the lower roof's own drainage before reaching the gutters. A lower gutter receiving runoff from both an upper and lower roof section may need to handle over 1,200 square feet of effective drainage area. In these cases, even a 6 inch gutter needs careful planning for downspout placement and count.
Downspout Count and Placement
Gutters are only half of the drainage equation. Downspouts are what actually move water from the gutter trough to the ground, and their count and placement matter just as much as gutter size. A single downspout on a 40 foot gutter run creates a bottleneck because all the water in the trough must travel the full length of the run before reaching the outlet. Water stacks up at the far end during heavy rain, and if the gutter slope is not steep enough, it overflows at the high end before reaching the downspout.
The general rule is one downspout for every 20 feet of gutter run, with outlets placed as close to the ends as practical. For a 40 foot run, two downspouts provide balanced drainage with water traveling no more than 20 feet in either direction before reaching an outlet. Adding a third downspout at the center of a long run provides extra capacity for extreme events.
Downspout size also matters. Standard 2x3 inch downspouts can drain a 5 inch gutter under moderate conditions, but they become the weak point during heavy rain. Oversized 3x4 inch downspouts move roughly twice the volume and resist clogging because the larger opening is harder for debris to block. For any home with 6 inch gutters in the Portland area, we recommend 3x4 downspouts as the standard pairing.
If your gutters overflow during heavy storms, the problem may not be clogging. It may simply be undersizing.
