Depoe Bay: Oregon's Most Exposed Coast
Depoe Bay is known as the whale watching capital of Oregon, but it's also one of the most weather-exposed communities on the entire coast. Homes here face direct ocean spray, salt-laden winds, and some of the most violent wave action on the Pacific seaboard. The famous Spouting Horn sends plumes of seawater hundreds of feet into the air during storms.
This extreme coastal exposure means gutter systems in Depoe Bay face conditions that would destroy standard residential installations in just a few years. Salt corrosion attacks metal at an accelerated rate. Wind-driven rain finds every gap and seam. Storm surges can damage fascia boards and pull insufficiently mounted gutters right off the house.
Annual rainfall exceeds 65 inches, and much of it arrives in intense bursts during Pacific storm events. A gutter system that might be adequate in an inland city is simply undersized for what Depoe Bay dishes out between October and April.
