Metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular across Oregon. But a common question comes up during or after installation: does a metal roof still need gutters? The short answer is yes. In fact, metal roofs create specific water management challenges that make properly sized gutters more important than they are on a traditional asphalt shingle roof.

Some homeowners assume that because metal sheds water so efficiently, the water simply takes care of itself. The opposite is true. The efficiency of a metal roof is exactly what makes gutters essential. Without gutters, water pouring off a metal roof in sheets hits the ground at high velocity, erodes landscaping, saturates the soil next to your foundation, and splashes mud and debris onto your siding. In a state that receives as much rain as Oregon does, those problems add up fast.

Why Water Moves Differently on Metal Roofs

Asphalt shingles have a rough, granular surface that slows water down as it travels from the ridge to the eave. Each row of shingles creates a small lip that breaks the flow. By the time rainwater reaches the gutter on a shingle roof, it is moving at a moderate speed and arrives in a relatively controlled stream.

Metal roofing panels are smooth. Water hits the surface and accelerates immediately, gaining speed as it travels down the slope with almost no friction to slow it. This higher velocity means the water can overshoot a standard gutter entirely, spraying past the outer lip and landing on the ground below.

A standard 5 inch K style gutter that works perfectly on an asphalt shingle roof may not be adequate for a metal roof with the same square footage and pitch. Many metal roof installations call for 6 inch gutters, larger downspouts, or both to handle the increased volume and velocity of water that arrives at the eave.

The angle of the roof plays a major role as well. Steeper metal roofs launch water farther from the eave, which means the gutter needs to be positioned precisely to catch the stream. On lower pitched metal roofs, water tends to cling to the panel surface longer and may curl underneath the drip edge before releasing. Both scenarios require careful gutter placement by an installer who understands how metal roofs behave in real rain conditions, not just on paper.

Snow Shed and Oregon Winters

Oregon's climate varies dramatically from the valley floor to the foothills and mountain communities.
